FAQ
Here you will find answers to all of the common questions, if your question was not answered below, feel free to contact us.
We are custom surf lagoon builders and designers. We can build you a surf lagoon to fit your land size. We can design surf lagoons with different size waves, different maneuver sections, different reefs, different wave heights and different skill levels from pro, advanced, intermediate and beginner. For example, our 18 plungers, (12) break surf lagoon is 2.2 acres and 200 feet across the back generator wall, and it fans out the first 90 feet to 320 feet wide and is 330 feet in length to the beach. We have a smaller standard surf lagoon, which is 9 plungers, 6 breaks, 1.1 acres and is 100 feet at the wave generator wall and fans out to 165 feet wide and is 330 feet in length. Again, we can design you a surf lagoon with any number of reef breaks.
Waves can be as frequent as one every 8.5 seconds. Wave heights vary from 3 feet to 8 feet in height. White water paddle in waves are also available for beginners. The frequency and size is computer controlled so that different conditions can be provided according to user groups (e.g. large barreling waves for advanced surfers, smaller waves for beginners). Multiple reef breaks are created on the same wave in order to increase the number of surfers in the surf lagoon at any one time.
Waves are produced by an actuating mechanical plunger modular system, that uses hydraulic motor power to mimic the velocity profile and circular particle motion of ocean surf.
There are two ways to measure wave height; put simply one can measure either the front of the wave or the back of the wave. The measurements detailed for this project are calculated on the front of the wave.
The surf lake is designed to cater to a wide variety of users. We have advanced, intermediate and beginner reef break sections. In terms of skill, we expect expert surfers to be able to use the park for training, recreation and competition and complete beginners to be able to use the park (with an instructor and smaller waves) as a safe entry point into the sport. The other amenities at the surf facility will provide additional things to do and see so that the surf facility will be a complete day out for anyone that visits. The surf lagoon provides a safe and controlled environment, where there are no sharks, rip currents or jelly fish or annoying nibbling crabs at your feet.
Waves are computer controlled in size, shape, frequency and direction of break. The technology can produce smaller waves for beginners, (Inside reef) steeper waves (primary reef) for expert surfers (perfect for aerial tricks) and change the direction of the break so that surfers can enjoy both lefts and rights. We can custom design you any wave you wish to ride. We can design you different maneuver sections such as barrel, wedge, ridge, reo, cut back, weaving and aerial sections.
The plunger modules are pushed down and out into the water by hydraulic mechanical means. As the plunger module pulls backward using stored energy or potential energy, the modules moves forward, the plungers then push out a swell into the surf lagoon. The swell then breaks over the designed artificial reef breaks throughout the surf lagoon. The maximum wave height is 8 feet.
Guest time in the main 18 plunger, 12 break 2.2 surf lagoon will be divided into 1-hour sessions. Individual wave ride time is 12-17 seconds and surfers will get approximately 10 -12 waves to themselves in each session.
At full capacity (worst case) expect to be riding a wave every 5 – 6 minutes. You will be in the water during your entire surfing time. Wait times between waves will be shorter depending upon the number of surfers signed up for a session.
At the deepest point, by the back generator wall, the pool is 10 feet deep. The waves break in shallower water. You will not hit the bottom when you fall off your board. You will fall past the reef into the channel which contains deeper water running along the reef.
No, The surf lagoon does not have side currents or rip currents. Our patent rip current and energy mitigation technology eliminates dangerous rip currents. If you fall let the wave pass and then come up to the surface.
Waves will come in many variations. You may have 10-12 similar waves, but each with some variation.
in our 18 plunger, 12 break surf lagoon, the advanced and intermediate sections of the surf lagoon upto 120 surfers can surf during each 1-hour surf session. In the beginner sections upto 150 surfers at 100% capacity can surf during each 1-hour surf session. The main wave will be a split A frame with side reefs on the sides of the surf lagoon. The intermediate reef has 4 breaks with a nice mellow spilling beginner wave in the inside middle.
The current anticipated cost for a beginner 1-hour surf session is $30. There will be promotions and passes for regular users designed to encourage a surfing community at the park. We will have day passes, season passes and monthly year-round memberships.
Swellspot has a patent surf lagoon bottom construction patent.
The system requires 450kW of electrical power. Electrical: 3.6 megawatts. Power consumed is a function of daily wave operations.
Swellspot Wave Company has two licensing opportunities. The first is licensing. The licensee will choose a city territory to license our technologies. Swellspot will charge a license fee, construction costs and a small ongoing monthly royalty. Swellspot is currently taking licensing applications for cities across the world. The license application can be found under the "licensing" tab on the website menu. We also have partnering opportunities where Swellspot builds the surf lagoon or park for our raw costs and in exchange we come in as an equity partner in your project. This is a great structure for some projects to mitigate the build out costs and keep the cost of a project down. The costs to build a surf lagoon or surf facility will vary depending on the size and design of the surf lagoon and location where its being built.
Operating costs vary depending on what size surf lagoon and how much total water volume.
The park will take an estimated (6) months to construct from the day of receiving local permit approvals from the local city, town or county.
Including parking, and supporting infrastructure requires approximately 6-7 acres for the 12 break, 2.2 acre surf lagoon. The 1.1 acre 6 break surf lagoon including parking and supporting infrastructure requires 4-5 acres.
The Swellspot Surf Facilities are not designed to replace surfing in the natural environment, quite the opposite. For expert surfers it is a place to surf with consistent waves all year round, a place to train, to have fun and to practice new maneuvers. For less experienced surfers and non-surfers it is a safe, controlled environment in which to try surfing and a pleasant, fun environment for the entire family to enjoy a day out. With no sharks or jelly fish.
This is addressed in detail in the business plan. Main revenue generated from the surf lagoon is supplemented by revenue from other activities and ancillary services such as, equipment rentals, locker rentals and food and beverage.
Beyond the first phase of the SwellSpot Surf Lagoon there are possibilities, subject to a thorough examination of the business case and the suitability of the site, to expand into other areas and add additional complimentary action sports facilities. Such as wake boarding, skate boarding, bmx bike course, kayaking course and a scuba pool. This would increase the variety and number of revenue streams for the business.
Another possibility that will be considered is the expansion of the brand into new sites in North America and worldwide. Once a profitable operation is established the SwellSpot Wave Company, will serve as a model for what can be replicated around the globe.

Yes, Swellspot will offer a winter climate package with our surf lagoon. The water will be heated as well as a patent pending winter enclosure will make the winter surf experience very enjoyable.
Yes, you can. However, we don't recommend it, as it lessens the surfing experience.
